Yes, it can be quite disturbing having nightmares.

Having those feelings of panic or wanting to scream in your sleep and you can’t and then you suddenly wake up panting for air."

 

That's OK @Glisten It would be a philosophical and metaphysical question as yet unanswered as to why we dream. Something primordial perhaps.

 

And yes I gasp for air, I groan, get sweaty and overheated. I panic in the nightmare.

@Glisten , SWs are a term used here for Social Workers. One of mine is highly educated.

I have no doubt that there are a number of very well educated Support Workers.

You are very well informed. Have you studied MH?

The mind paralyses the body during nightmares, so we don't physically re-act to them. But sometimes that doesn't stop me. I can interrupt the fight and pull myself out of it, even abruptly and physically.

 

They can be truly terrifying.

@Stout  your ability to pull yourself out of a dream state when you are having a terrifying nightmare.
Why is that?

Does that say about how your brain works?
